37.5% – That’s the amount of your day spent at work from 8 am to 5 pm. Most people, according to a survey, do not love their jobs. Put differently, they do not feel satisfied with their work. On a search for a job, it is often easy to jump at any opportunity that presents itself due to the desperation to quickly start work. This leaves lots of people doing things they do not like for similar or entirely different reasons.
Work is an important part of our lives. It is through work we feel fulfilled. Through work, we also make a living. It is through work that we make our dreams come true. Work is important and should be approached with all consciousness and seriousness.
Regardless of whether you are working, searching for a job, or still a student, this article can help you begin to take control of your career path and give you a road map to choosing your jobs.
How To Find Jobs You Would Love To Do
1. Start with Self-awareness
The best place to start is with yourself. Knowing yourself is the best way to know what you will like to do. Most people give the blunt advice of “Do what you love”.
However, finding out what you love to do is the difficult part. In some cases, what you love doing isn’t in demand hence provides little return to survive. Knowing yourself well will allow you to strike a balance between what employers want and what you like to do.
Knowing yourself is your best bet. People can recommend growing fields, push you to enter what they are doing, or you may even be tempted to go into something simply because others seem to be making it there. You could also make it there but will you be happy in the end? Will you feel fulfilled? How will you feel about your work?
It isn’t just enough to do something, do something that gives you a feeling of fulfillment.
2. Seek Career Advice (Counselling and Mentorship)
To gain more clarity and direction on the best path to choose, you might want to engage with a career counselor and/or a mentor.
These are people who can give you insights into the field of work and give you perspectives you may never be exposed to at your current experience level.
Share your goals with them and approach them in a manner that shows curiosity and desire to learn.
3. Would You Do It as a Hobby?
Part of finding something you like is asking yourself the question, “What will I do as a hobby”. Most people simply see their jobs as a money-making venture so that they can then focus on the others that they like doing. And that is often the source of making the wrong choice of work or job.
Your job should be something you feel good about. It should connect with your long-term vision and career goals. It should give you benefits beyond the salary such as fulfillment and satisfaction.
4. Get Your Networking Genie On
Getting a job you like is possible. One way to get such a job is to lean on your networking skills. Joining societies and groups related to what you love will expose you to the right network. Meeting key players in this area, interacting with, and gaining industry knowledge is good not just for professional development and growth but also for getting job offers.
You can take this very approach on LinkedIn. Connect with people you admire, leaders in the industry, and engage them. Seek knowledge from them. If possible, get a mentor in that area. However, a good mentor doesn’t need to be active in your industry as far as they can give you insights that propel you into higher positions.
5. If you Don’t Know Your Passion; Try Everything
Most young people feel they haven’t discovered their passion yet. And that is normal. Some people identify theirs early in life while it takes others some time and exploration to find theirs.
As children, we often have aspirations to become this and that only to divert into something entirely different as adults. That’s normal. Until you do something, you can’t be sure if you like it or not.
That is the reason why you need to try as many things as you feel comfortable with, in your early years so by the time you are ready to enter the job market, you have figured out what you like. You can do this by working on projects, volunteering, and taking internships.
If you have started working without figuring out your passion, you might need to start exploring and taking up volunteer opportunities and internships in things that have some meaning to you. You can consider shifting careers if you find the new place more fulfilling.
6. Add Some Experience to Your Portfolio
The fact that you like doing something doesn’t mean you are going to be given a job on a silver platter. Employers love to see candidates who have some form of experience in what they are applying for. Proof that you have done similar tasks and succeeded at them is a great way to show your worth to employers.
Depending on your career, you can choose to gain experience in different ways. For instance, a graphic design freelancer looking to get a job as a Creative Designer might already gain some experience working for clients or (s)he can simply create concept designs for the company. Also, every creative should have a portfolio either a website or a pdf that outlines their best work.
Others can work on their projects or help others with their projects, take up internships or volunteer their time as they learn about the field.
7. Start Your Own Organisation
In some cases, you may not find your passion anywhere or perhaps the way you want stuff to be run. In such a case, an option is to start your own organization. This could be a business, a non-governmental organization, or a for-profit social enterprise. It takes some guts to look beyond a job but some people simply do not feel they belong anywhere which pushes them to start something of their own. Some others also see opportunities outside the job setting and decide to go for them.
Starting a Business for instance is hard. It takes lots of self-accountability to be able to rise to the top and stay there. This is because you are the boss when you start your own business. You are responsible for the successes and failures of the venture.
8. Take a Test
If all of the above aren’t successful, try digging more into your personality. Seek to understand who you are, what you like, and what you don’t like. Also, seek to understand the current job market and what employers are looking for that you have; It could be skills, experience or talent, or all.
A good way to do these things is to simply read, watch videos and explore new science, arts, or other fields that you have never ventured into.
Take a course. Seek some advice. Travel. Listen to music. The best of ideas come when we are relaxed or having fun.
Two other things you need to do at this stage are to take a personality test and a career test. Some personality tests can do both for you at the same time. I have found the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test to be very useful when it comes to personality and career choice.
Work is a part of life, not outside of life. Hence, our work must not be outside of our joy, happiness, and fulfillment. We should be able to go to work as happy people and leave as fulfilled people.
