A Brief History Of Mobile Phones

Public telephones are a thing of the past. Most people have begun carrying around mobile phones because it is more convenient. When a person needs to make a call, either for emergency or for pleasure, there is no need to search for a phone booth. A mobile phone can be used to make a call for the purpose of convenience.

To give you an idea about the mobile phones for sale, it’s best to take a look at the history of phones. Technology has changed rapidly since the mobile phone was first invented. When you look at the mobile phones of today, they are slimmer in design and have a number of incredible features.

AT&T had a mobile telephone service as early as 1947, but it was set up in only a few towns in the United States. The calls were still set up manually by an operator, so it was not an instant connection to the person that you would have wanted to call. Mobile telephony then received some updates in 1965 with the use of radio channels to help with the connections.

The mobile radio telephones were quite large – almost the size of a briefcase. They were nothing like the ones that you see in classifieds for sale now. While most of the mobility was focused in the United States, Germany and Norway were experimenting with technology as well. Now the technology is found around the world – including in Ghana.

The mobile phone became close to what it is today in 1973 when it was actually designed to be handheld. Prior to that, it was being installed inside of cars and other vehicles. The first prototype, which was used by Martin Cooper of Motorola, weighed just over one kilogram and was 23 centimeters long. It only allowed for 30 minutes of talk time and then took 10 hours to recharge.

Can you imagine the Apple iPhone allowing only 30 minutes of talk time and then taking 10 hours to recharge before you could use it again? It’s a good thing that technology has been improving rapidly since 1973.

The Cellular Networks

Today, when you go to buy mobile phones, they boast various network speeds. Buying a mobile phone involves checking out the network. Most phones range between 3G and 4G. Throughout Ghana, the Internet speeds are not as fast and so a 3G phone is likely going to be quite acceptable. 4G technology hasn’t reached the entire country and so buying the technology inside of the phone is not important because of being unable to access the technology.

1G was the analog cellular system that came first and was found in Tokyo in 1979. From there, it slowly spread around the globe and reached the US in 1983, Israel in 1986 and Australia in 1987.

2G was the second generation and therefore became “2G.” Phones with this technology emerged in the 1990s and provided a digital transmission instead of an analog one. This resulted in faster phone to network signaling.

3G was introduced somewhere around 2001 and used packet switching instead of circuit switching for the purpose of data transmission. Establishing a connection was possible faster and it was possible for mobile phones to share the same time slot as another. Low bit rate communications were then made possible with these advancements.

4G was introduced in 2009 and focused more on data optimization as well as speed improvements that were 10 times more than what was found on a 3G network. The technological difference is that an all IP network is used instead of circuit switching. VoIP is used more heavily with this network, so packets are sent over the Internet.

The Smart Phone

The smartphone is often attributed to the Apple iPhone, which was first introduced in 2007. Prior to that, however, was the IBM Simon. It was introduced in 1993 and was a combination of a mobile phone, a PDA, a pager, and a fax machine all in one. There was a touchscreen with a QWERTY keyboard, a calendar, a notepad, email functions, a calculator, and much more inside of it.

As technology improved, it was also possible to make phones smaller and lighter. The older models were often called bricks because they had the same shape and size of one. The phones today are much more hand-held with more energy-efficient electronics as well as more advanced batteries. This resulted in increased usage without the need to charge for a considerable amount of time.

The BlackBerry phone is similar to that of the original IBM Simon, though they are much lighter now. BlackBerry was always known for their PDAs and now they have integrated those same functions with a phone in order to provide an advanced smartphone.

The actual definition of a smartphone is one that has advanced computing functions, similar to that of a computer. This means that it can take on many of the same tasks as a computer, complete with an operating system.

Today’s definition of a smartphone shows more of the history of mobile phones. Now, a smartphone will usually feature the ability to call, text and surf the Internet. It should be able to store apps, which can include games, movies and music. Many people will actually use a smartphone in place of a home phone as well as a computer because it provides all of the functions that are needed.

New Features

Mobile phones can do a lot these days and you don’t necessarily need a high speed Internet connection to get the maximum benefit from them.

Some of the features include:

– Cameras

– Notepads

– Scanners

– Talk to text

The first camera phone was sold in Japan in 2000. This was long after the first digital camera, but the integration into the mobile phone made it that much more convenient. The technology only allowed for pixels versus megapixels when first developed. The Samsung phone, the HTC phone, and many others today now have 3 MP or more to make it easy to take photos on the go. Some of the phones are even better than digital cameras, providing photos that are worthy of printing and framing.

Other phones are equipped with cameras in the front and the back, making it possible to take photos as well as to video conference with such apps as Skype and FaceTime. Videos can also be recorded on many phones using the same basic camera feature. When Internet is obtained, sharing the photos and videos can be done with ease.

Regardless of Internet connection or not, the mobile phones today are simply more powerful. A Nokia phone, a Sony phone, and various others are loaded with features that make it easy to make calls and obtain a quality signal.

Throughout Ghana, 3G phones are found readily on the market and in classifieds. When you want a phone, you have to remember the history of the phone to see how far we have come. Just because Internet is not fast doesn’t mean you cannot benefit from mobile phones and the technology found inside of them. Prepaid and contract plans are available, making it possible to get the connectivity at a rate that you can afford.
